Marvin L. Miller

Unigene Laboratories; Director

Marvin L. Miller has a broad background in senior management of health care enterprises, including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, in vitro diagnostics, clinical laboratory services and instruments. His experience spans both U.S. and international operations. After retiring as President and CEO of Nextran, an affiliate of Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Mr. Miller now serves as Executive Chairman of Onconova Therapeutics Inc. He is also on the Boards of GTC Biotherapeutics Inc., Unigene Laboratories, Inc. and Tepnel Life Sciences PLC.

Prior to joining Nextran, Mr. Miller served as Vice President, Biotechnology Licensing for American Cyanamid Company. He was responsible for biotechnology licensing and business development of the Pharmaceutical and Agricultural Divisions, and managed several collaborations both in the U.S. and abroad. Most notable is the Celltech (UK) joint venture. Mr. Miller was Vice President, Johnson & Johnson International. At Johnson & Johnson, he had P&L responsibility for nine international diagnostics manufacturing and marketing companies. These included companies in Europe, Japan, Mexico, and Canada. He spearheaded double-digit sales and profit growth and negotiated numerous licensing agreements.

Mr. Miller began his career in 1964 with Hoffmann-LaRoche where he was the original product manager for Valium. He assumed additional pharmaceutical marketing responsibilities in the ensuing years. In 1972 he was elected the company’s youngest officer. Following a successful turnaround record of Roche’s diagnostic businesses, he became a corporate Vice President with P&L responsibility for one division and two subsidiary diagnostic companies. These included Roche Diagnostic Products Division, Roche Biomedical Laboratories, Inc. and Roche Analytical Instruments, Inc. Mr. Miller has published more than sixty papers in laboratory medicine, marketing and psychology. His patent for creatinine kinase-MB became a highly successful serologic test for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction.

Active in several associations, Mr. Miller is a founding Board Member of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO). He serves on the Boards of the National Center for Genome Resources, Columbia University Innovation Enterprise and BioNJ. He received a B.S. in Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and a M.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin.
